The Gospel for Hilo, Hawai’i
The Meaning Behind our Church Name
Cultural
In Hawaiian, Waiākea means "broad water" and Uka means "Upland or towards the Mountain." Geographically, the Waiākea Uka Ahupuaa (Land Divisions) is the source of water that flows from our two prominent mountains, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. This source feeds into the Hilo District where our Church resides in the Pana'ewa community.
Contextual
Hawaii has a rich history of how the first missionaries (1820-1893) brought the gospel to the native Hawaiians and contextualized their ministry efforts with one primary source: the Bible. In 1997, a group of Jesus followers desired to begin a work emphasizing the Scriptures, resulting in the Waiākea Uka Bible Church.
Christological
Our church's name represents the symbolic source of our living water, the Lord Jesus Christ.
“But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:14 ESV
